מדריך הלמידה מבוסס על ספרה של אלה שוחט, הקולנוע הישראלי – מזרח/מערב והפוליטיקה של הייצוג (האוניברסיטה הפתוחה, 2005), ועוסק באחד הקונפליקטים המרכזיים בחברה הישראלית, יחסי אשכנזים-מזרחים, תוך מעקב אחר ייצוגיו בקולנוע הישראלי. המדריך עוסק בתפיסות של המזרחיוּת בחברה הישראלית, וכן בהחלת תפיסות אלה על ייצוג היחסים בין ישראלים ופלסטינים. כמו כן, באמצעות עיון ביצירות הקולנוע נבדק תהליך התהוות זהותה של החברה הישראלית.
